KCE History
Like the mythical phoenix, the Kenyan Community in Greater Edmonton Association or KCE, rose from the ashes of the Kenya Students Association or KSA. For as long as anyone can remember, the KSA served the social and other needs of the Kenyan community in Edmonton, and was based at the University of Alberta, where most of its members were students. Beginning in the middle of the 1990s, the replenishment of the Kenyan student population dwindled to a trickle. The KSA suffered a slow and predictable death. However, with the resurgence of the economy of the Province of Alberta early this decade, Kenyan families began settling permanently in the province. Soon the working Kenyans would outnumber the students.
At a potluck organized for visiting Kenyan athletes in August 2001, it was decided that the Kenyan community needed stable leadership within a body that would be charged with, among other responsibilities, organizing similar social events. Soon after the potluck, a revolving committee was constituted. The committee organized events for about two years, and in November 2003 the bylaws that would lead to the birth of KCE were adopted. Formal registration followed in March 2004 and KCE, as we know it today, was born.
KCE has a postal address and a bank account, and is currently run by a Board of Directors. The association does not have an office and all correspondence is by regular or electronic mail. Membership is open to eligible persons and is by annual subscription.
